Hartland

Hartland made excellent toys, and manufactured a whole parade of classic American heroes, small and smaller. They made Marx look like German watchmakers, with their hollow, hard plastic figures, mounted on way under-sized ponies, which seemed to explode in all directions at the slightest touch. But the artistry, like that of Marx toys, was impressive. The tiny faces of their George Washington and Robert E. Lee have never been surpassed. There are Hartland mounted cowboy toys which are easily recognized as Roy Rogers, or Paladin, or the Rifleman. As a professional sculptor I fell in love with these mini-monuments, icons of our colorful American history, and still gaze with professional reverance on each one I see.
